San Pat asks LRA status for base land

Only one county can be designated to run development

San Patricio County will seek federal government approval as the local authority in charge of redeveloping the portion of Naval Station Ingleside that won't belong to the Port of Corpus Christi.


Port officials assisted San Patricio County in drafting a letter that will be submitted today to the Department of Defense's Office of Economic Adjustment, asking that the county be named the local redevelopment authority, or LRA, for 155 acres of base property.

This effort pits San Patricio County against Nueces County, which also is seeking LRA status for the property. Naval Station Ingleside, designated last year for closure, is in San Patricio County. The LRA will be the gatekeeper for potentially millions of federal dollars for economic studies and redevelopment planning.
