Navy steals Hunters Point Shipyard RAB election

As the notorious homebuilder Lennar and its cheerleaders Mayor Gavin
Newsom and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi itch to get their hands on gold
shovels to break ground for the construction of 1,600 or more new homes
on one of the deadliest Superfund sites in the country, Navy overseers
of Hunters Point Shipyard cleanup are moving to retake control of the
Restoration Advisory Board, a resident-Navy collaboration that has been
expertly led by the community for the past several years. The RAB,
headed by a Navy co-chair and a community co-chair, has worked
effectively under the leadership of community co-chairs and advocates
Caroline Washington, Lynne Brown and Maurice Campbell. All three have
held true to the mandate expressed by 87 percent of San Francisco voters
who agreed with Proposition P on the 2000 ballot that development of the
Shipyard must wait until it is thoroughly cleaned of chemical and
radiological contamination.

Now, however, in an election the Navy ratified in July amidst charges of
racism, bribery, election fraud and deliberate manipulation by the Navy
and its contractors, the Hunters Point Shipyard RAB elected a non-member
as its community co-chair on June 28 in violation of the organization?s
bylaws. Attendance records released by the Navy after a Public Records
Act demand for disclosure was made by the Bay View document that Barbara
Bushnell of ROSES missed six meetings of the organization in 2004 and
therefore, under the 2003 and 2004 RAB bylaws revisions, was not
eligible for nomination or election as its co-chair.
