Subject: [CPEO-IRF] "Early" transfer considered at Ft. Ord (CA)
 
[This reminds me of the teen-ager who does a poor job cleaning his room
or delays the mowing the lawn knowing that his parents will find it
easier to do the work themselves. If the central argument for dirty
transfers is that local government or the private sector can do a better
or quicker job than the responsible armed service, then there is no
incentive for the military to do prompt or complete cleanup. -LS]

There's a path to quick munitions cleanup, but it carries risks

Along Gen. Jim Moore Boulevard sits 350 acres of what is likely the
hottest real estate on Fort Ord.

Any homes built there would offer exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean.

Right now, though, wire fencing encircles the property bordering the
multirange area, the most contaminated portion of the former Army base.

It's always been a given that this gold mine would take a long time to
be developed. First it has to be cleared of leftover munitions and
explosives before it can be transferred to Seaside.

But it appears the city could get its hands on the property a lot sooner
-- 10 years sooner according to one estimate -- albeit with munitions
and explosives still present.
