Two years after evacuation, Community Within the Corridor East Block reopening to residents

The East Block of Community Within the Corridor is reopening to residents more than two years after elevated levels of a cancer-causing chemical forced the abrupt evacuation of some 150 residents from the affordable housing development on Milwaukee's north side.

City and state officials along with the project's lead developer, Que El-Amin, said the building has received the necessary approvals to reopen.

El-Amin said he expected residents to start moving in this month and to reach full occupancy in the 130 units by the end of August.

The return of residents comes more than two years after the March 2023 order that residents leave their homes due to elevated levels of the carcinogen trichloroethylene, or TCE, at the building that was once part of the Briggs & Stratton complex. Many had been living for months at the building at 2748 N. 32nd St.
