Skagway’s new community garden on hold due to contamination findings By Melinda Munson KHNS Public Radio (AK) April 17, 2025 For years, Jewell Gardens restaurant in Skagway cultivated produce and stunning flowers on the land adjacent to their business. They leased the plot from the municipality. But when the proprietor died, the assembly voted not to renew the land lease. There was growing interest in expanding the tiny community garden by the school. And moving the garden to an already established piece of municipal property seemed like a good solution. But in November, the municipality received some unfortunate news. The new garden site underwent testing, and the results were concerning. “They got four test pits in and found — I want to say it’s diesel,” said Borough Manager Emily Deach. “…And so they stopped, contacted DEC, talked to DEC about what the next steps would be.” DEC is the Alaska Department of Conservation. Skagway’s current plan is to resume testing and have their contractor meet with DEC.
