Study: Black, low-income Asheville areas more at risk for poor environmental conditions

Low-income areas of Asheville with large nonwhite populations experience more unsafe environmental conditions than wealthy white neighborhoods, a new study showed.

UNC Chapel Hill students teamed up with Asheville conservationist group MountainTrue to create a multilayer online map of Western North Carolina that illustrates the relationship between environmental and social issues - such as the amount of hazardous waste in an area with respect to its race percentages and income levels. 

“It’s really important that you realize that all of these indicators work together to create this vulnerable community and work to the detriment of the community,” UNC student Etheridge Daniels said.

A part of their capstone graduation project in UNC’s public policy department, the students created the map using data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Census Bureau and the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)
