Contaminated site cleanup in Nonantum moves forward

Residents have until June 20 to add their comments to a draft plan to analyze and clean up former industrial sites in Nonantum contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including trichloroethylene (TCE).

About 25 people attended a community meeting at Post 440 on Wednesday, where staff from Woodard & Curran, a consultant for Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, the parent company of former property owner TRW, gave an update on work done so far at the sties and offered a look at work to be done in the Phase II Scope of Work (SOW) plan.

The investigations are being conducted at former industrial properties located at 459-471 Watertown St. and 320-330 Nevada Street. The other property owner is One Nevada Realty LLC.

Audience members peppered the project managers, engineer and licensed site professional with questions on the origins of the deep groundwater and air contamination at and near the sites, and asked for cleanup specifics in the coming years.
