$13M plan to clean up Superfund site moves forward

A $13 million plan to further clean up a contaminated groundwater Superfund site in Garden City is moving forward, officials said.

Once home to the Roosevelt Field airfield, the site now includes Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall, office buildings, parking areas and Hazelhurst Park, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
And while the site been monitored, remediation is still required, officials said.

“Protecting and cleaning up Long Island’s groundwater is critically important to the health of Long Island residents, communities and businesses,” EPA Regional Administrator Pete Lopez said in a statement.
