Ann Arbor and DEQ to keep eye on Broadway Street pollution remedies

ANN ARBOR, MI - The plans for a major redevelopment of a 6.4-acre vacant property along Broadway Street in Ann Arbor include addressing decades-old pollution from past uses of the site.

And some of the new taxes that would be generated by the $146 million development are expected to help pay for those remediation and mitigation efforts, including removing some of the contaminated soils and installing vapor-mitigation controls, as well as a permeable reactive barrier at the eastern edge of the site to reduce the spread of the underground pollution off site toward the Huron River.

Brett Lenart, the city's planning manager, provided both a verbal and written overview of the cleanup strategy and tax-increment financing plan at a meeting of the city's Brownfield Plan Review Committee this week, noting numerous historical site activities involved the use of hazardous materials and petroleum products.
