DEP reconsiders $1.2 million drinking water fix

WAYNESBORO -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is rethinking a $1.2 million plan to correct drinking water contamination for nine homes southeast of Waynesboro.

Private springs and wells in the area are contaminated with trichloroethylene, a chemical that was popular 60 years ago as a metal degreaser. The chemical is a carcinogen and can lead to other health problems, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Waynesboro area contamination was discovered in 2007 when a well on Lyons Road was tested as part of a voluntary cleanup of a nearby commercial site, according to Repetz.
