How clean-up of lead and toxic soil could allow a Chatsworth park to re-open
Lead, toxic soil removal to begin at shuttered Chatsworth Park South

With the sun reddened, rocky hills behind him, Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch Englander and other local officials sunk their shovels into a mound of dirt Monday to symbolize the start of a $9 million clean-up effort to reopen Chatsworth Park South.

It was a gesture eight years in the making and welcomed by many Chatsworth residents, who had wondered when their beloved 81-acre park might be reopened after it was fenced off in 2008.

They got their answer on Monday: By the end of the year.

Contamination from lead bullets used in the 1950s and ‘60s at a former gun club owned by actor Roy Rogers prompted the closure. Investigators discovered toxic soil contamination left over from shotgun pellets and clay pigeons used on its 12-acre skeet-shooting range.
