DNR Answers Questions About Toxic Soil In Camdenton
Toxins In Soil Around Old Camdenton Factory Are 1,000 Times Higher Than Acceptable Levels

CAMDENTON, Mo. - The discovery of toxic soil and groundwater in Camdenton due to a former manufacturing plant has raised questions about who’s responsible and why it took so long to discover the danger.

CAMDENTON, Mo. - Toxic soil and groundwater is raising more concerns for some Camdenton residents, who worry that recent discoveries about the harmful effects of the toxin trichloroethylene (TCE).

LakeExpo.com contacted the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) following the public meeting held in Camdenton at the Mid-MO Fire District building on March 8 to ask whether TCE is present in Lake of the Ozarks, where the soil excavated in the 1990s was taken, and why DNR did not test air quality inside the building once owned by Modine Manufacturing immediately upon learning about the health effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) in air.

In 2013, DNR “approved a work plan for Indoor Air Sampling inside the … [vacant] building” out of concern for the “indoor air quality.” However, ownership of the building and property on which it sits changed. On “four separate occasions,” Modine tried to sample the air, but faced challenges accessing the “building and getting the HVAC [heating, ventilation, and air conditioning] system operating to be representative of an occupied building.” Access and HVAC were not resolved until March 2015, according to Bastian.
