CTS Superfund cleanup plans set

Three acres left polluted by a carcinogenic chemical for decades will be cleaned up using two methods, according a decision issued Thursday by federal environmental officials.

Once implemented, the $9 million cleanup near a south Asheville neighborhood is expected to address the source of trichloroethylene, better known as TCE, which is leeching from the CTS of Asheville site on Mills Gap Road.

The record of decision issued by the Environmental Protection Agency called for a 1.2-acre area to be cleaned up using a method known as electrical resistance heating, which involves electrifying rods drilled in the soil to heat and evaporate TCE.
