Hanover awaits results of latest testing of contamination at  
Fireworks site

HANOVER -- The results of a new round of environmental testing at the  
severely contaminated site of a former munitions factory are expected  
sometime in January, town officials said Tuesday.

More than 150 sediment samples from two ponds and two rivers and core  
samples of soil were taken from about 76 locations within the site,  
which is in the southwest corner of Hanover.

The environmental engineering firm Tetra Tech collected the samples  
between late September and November and will test them for  
contaminants at a cost of about $330,000.

The 280-acre site was studied as recently as 2008, but experts wanted  
a current assessment of the location and extent of the pollution,  
given the flooding that occurred in the area in the spring of 2010.
