City receives final report on brownfield study

The study, which represents three years of work, takes a comprehensive look at potential redevelopment of the dormant industrial land throughout Olean.

OLEAN - There’s now a formal vision for what the future could hold for hundreds of acres of long-unused industrial land.

City lawmakers were presented Tuesday with the final version of a study of Olean’s Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) — 900 acres of land located primarily within city limits where industrial contamination has impeded redevelopment. Bergmann Associates, a Rochester-based engineering firm the city hired in 2012 for $357,000 — completed the study.

The study, which had been worked on for nearly three years, examines the brownfields throughout Olean, their past uses, potential for redevelopment and marketing strategies, among other aspects. Those on BOA Steering Committee — which included local elected officials and business leaders — met 11 times with Bergmann representatives to discuss the study and the vision for brownfield properties. The city also held several public workshops to get input on the community on brownfield redevelopment.
