High Shoals pursues grant for polluted riverside land

High Shoals Mayor Dan Weekley envisions a day when a contaminated industrial site in his town will be cleansed and reborn.

“Being a typical Southern mill town that’s lost its mill, that kind of sucked the life out of everything,” he said, referring to the former McBess Industries site along the South Fork River. “But if you’re a dreamer and you look at the property, you can see all the potential it has.”

High Shoals is now pursuing a federal Brownfield grant to draw up a new practical use for the privately owned property. If that money comes through, the town can apply for more money to clean up the soil and carry out its full redevelopment vision.
