Pompton Lakes residents skeptical of state changes that shrink pollution danger zone

Lisa Riggiola’s Pompton Lakes home is no longer in an area contaminated by DuPont that poses a health risk after the state Department of Environmental Protection revised its pollution measurement standards.

After changing its environmental standards, the state has dramatically shrunk the size of a contaminated area in Pompton Lakes it believes to  pose a health risk – and cut in half the number of homes considered vulnerable to the pollution.

State officials say they made the decision based on a better understanding of the health effects of contamination, but the sudden change is drawing sharp rebuke from residents, who already harbor a deep mistrust of the state and federal agencies overseeing the site, as well as DuPont, the company whose operations caused the contamination. Residents have been waiting for decades for a full cleanup of the area.
