Superfund site still plagued by TCE

The Environmental Protection Agency recently released its second five-year review report for the trichloroethene contaminated McGraw-Edison Superfund site in Centerville located north of Dewey Road on Highway 5.

Hazardous wastes disposed of at the site — the now destroyed Cowan Enterprises building, 22900 Iowa Highway 5 — pose a significant threat to the environment, which prompted the EPA to designate it as a Superfund site.

The 142 page report released in July of 2014 states achieving remedial action objectives in the time frame has not occurred with the current technologies.

The technology in question, called a soil-vapor extraction system and an iron reactive permeable barrier wall, "has removed considerable TCE mass from the soil but has reached an asymptotic state, projected to be the result of a remaining source area south of the building the system cannot efficiently address."

Contaminated groundwater was confirmed to be bypassing the iron reactive permeable barrier wall. The EPA report states the wall provided some benefit but has almost reached the end of its usefulness.
