The Battle for North Bayshore

When developers like John Bertolotti started tying up property in Mountain View's North Bayshore in the 1970s, most of it was still farmland and its highest profile occupant was the dump.

"It was a total crapshoot. In fact, a lot of people thought we were nuts," Bertolotti, now president of Bearcat Properties, said of those early days. "There were just a lot of little lots with five broken down cars on them."

Today, the 500-acre enclave at the edge of San Francisco Bay is arguably the center of the tech universe. The problem? There's not enough of it to go around.

"You're so used to reading about cities who are paying the companies to locate there. Now, the companies are paying the cities," said Joel Kotkin, a fellow in urban studies at Chapman University who studies demographic trends. "What it says is how unbelievably valuable Silicon Valley is, and what's happening there is not happening anywhere else in the world."
