DEC to facilitate most of Clermont brownfield cleanup

CLERMONT - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be taking the lead on the Town of Clermont’s brownfield cleanup project along Route 9, just north of the town hall and highway department. 

Supervisor Raymond Staats and the Town Board met with engineer Michael Mason of the Bureau of Construction Services, a division of the DEC’s Environmental Services, on Wednesday morning to discuss the land rehabilitation project. 

The former Hettling Farm received a $616,738 grant from the NY Works II awards in January, with the town paying 10 percent of the estimated cost. Deputy Supervisor Robert Desmond estimates the projected town cost to be $68,526.40. 

The town originally acquired the 20.5 acre site in 2003; seven acres are contaminated by pesticides from the Hettling apple orchards. Overuse of pesticides and fertilizers on the orchards, row crops and vineyards contaminated the soils.
