Environmental study in Medina County spurs redevelopment of former brownfields

MEDINA, Ohio - The environment is a bit cleaner in Medina County than it was three years ago, when the city received a $1 million U.S. EPA brownfields assessment grant.

And redevelopment projects are in the works for several of the sites that now have a clean bill of health.

Funds have been spent on analyzing seven industrial or commercial properties in Medina and Chippewa Lake.

"Brownfield properties often have the stigma of potential environmental contamination from past manufacturing or other commercial operations," environmental consultant T&M Associates said during a public meeting last month at the Medina County District Library. "This fear typically delays redevelopment, as buyers, lenders and developers stay away until the potential liabilities are abated."
