Subject: [CPEO-BIF] Fwd: RE-Powering America's Land Initiative: EPA Releases List of Renewable Energy Projects on Contaminated Lands

Dear RE-Powering Stakeholders,

As you may know, EPA's RE-Powering America's Land Initiative tracks completed renewable energy projects developed on contaminated lands, landfills, and mine sites.  The Initiative has just updated this “tracking matrix,” more formerly known as the Renewable Energy Projects on Contaminated Lands, Landfills, and Mine Sites document, which can be found on our website

In this update, RE-Powering lists an additional 14 renewable energy projects installed on potentially or formerly contaminated lands, landfills, and mining sites (information on these new sites below). To learn more about one of the new sites go to this afternoon’s Greenversation blog post on the 9.5-MW solar energy system recently installed at the Volkswagen manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, TN. This site is an example of beneficial reuse of a remediated RCRA property.

Currently, EPA has information on over 70 renewable energy installations implemented on contaminated properties and located in 26 states.  Projects on this list include ground-mounted utility-scale systems, rooftop systems, and systems used for on-site power.  This combined capacity of over 215 MW is comparable to the capacity of a mid-size, coal-fired power plant. Summary statistics of the known installations are included in this document and provide insight on the use of renewable energy on contaminated lands.

This resource is for informational purposes only.  The information in this list was gathered from public announcements of renewable energy projects in the form of company press releases, news releases, and, in some cases, conversations with the parties involved.  It may not be a comprehensive list of all projects completed on contaminated land.  To provide information on additional projects, both completed as well as others in various stages of planning/construction, please email cleanenergy@epa.gov.

If you have any follow-up questions or would like to learn more about the RE-Powering Initiative, please contact cleanenergy@epa.gov.
Thank you,
