Getting brownfields to produce green

If Shell Chemical Co. decides to build its $2.5 billion ethane cracker plant in Potter Township, officials in Beaver County hope it spurs the long-awaited development of nearby brownfields.

"There's going to be economic development in the region without a doubt," said state Rep. Jim Christiana, R-15, Beaver, "but if we don't invest in brownfield development in Beaver County, (companies) are going to go to other sites." Brownfields, or former manufacturing or industrial sites, line the Ohio River from the Beaver-Allegheny County line west toward Midland. There are also a slew of reclaimed or empty brownfield sites away from the river, including the WestGate Business Park in Big Beaver and the former home of Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Beaver Falls.

Beaver County, Christiana said, needs to be aggressive in preparing brownfields for development as ancillary companies that might rely on the cracker plant's products or provide goods or services to it start surveying the area.
