Bayou Woods meadow could become brownfield area

FORT WALTON BEACH - The City Council has designated the former dump at the corner of Bayou Woods Drive and Sotir Street has been designated a brownfield area.

The city owns the vacant 6.8-acre meadow, which has been unused since the late 1960s. It started out as a borrow pit to provide dirt to widen Beal Parkway and later was used as a landfill.

The brownfield designation - which indicates the presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants - will allow the city to accept a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to pay for a full environmental assessment of the site.
