City steps in to recycle properties
Program reclaims areas that likely wouldn't be used

Coralville officials gave a guided tour of the construction that's happening in the Iowa River Landing, using the opportunity to explain the city's Brownfield Program, which has played a major role in the area’s development.

The EPA defines a "brownfield" as a property, the expansion, redevelopment or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. The negative perception of brownfields - made famous by such infamous cleanup sites in Love Canal in Niagara Falls, N.Y. - has caused people to view them as places that should be avoided rather than developed.

"The thing about brownfields is there's kind of a negative stigma to them, that if something is called a brownfield, they think it's automatically bad," said Eric Isaacs, Coralville’s Brownfields project coordinator. "Being classified a brownfield just means there's the perception of contamination."
