Next Phase of the GM Clean Up Nears End of Comment Period

Tonight marks the public hearing in response to the DEC plans for dredging river sediment and the land engineering to be required of a new, yet to be named, developer.

You really only get a sense of the magnitude of the GM site from above. Barring easy access to a helicopter, there's the aerial photograph-turned-map in the latest State Department of Environmental Conservation clean up proposal, which is pictured, in part, here.

Before the massive development project gets going - Village officials still wait with much anticipation for the announcement of a narrowed selection of bidders from GM from a pool of five to six applicants (according to Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio) - there is the massive clean up. “Brownfield” is a term we of the post-industrial waterfront world have come to know well in various developments from Hudson Harbor to the coming River's Edge.

Despite the bad label, "based on the findings of the investigation, NYSDEC in consultation with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has determined that the site does not pose a significant threat." Once the area has been sufficiently dredged, scoured and capped, the allowable uses for the development are limited to commerical and restricted residence (of common ownership, whose tenants would supposedly not go digging in their backyard gardens).
