EPA to clean soil of former Staten Island lead factory By Deborah E. Young Staten Island Advance (NY) March 6, 2012STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In the three years since trucks began kicking up dust in the the vacant Port Richmond lot that was once home to the Jewett White Lead Factory, much has been learned about what exactly was in that dust: Lead concentrations as high as 240,000 ppm -- in other words, 24 percent lead.
After an outcry by community advocates and pressure from elected officials, the construction vehicles were ordered out and the site sealed off. Surveys, studies and hearings got under way.
Now the federal Environmental Protection Agency has set forth a sweeping plan to excavate the contaminated soil at 2000 Richmond Terr. and haul it away from Staten Island to a designated landfill.
