Officials dedicate site of future urban farm in Gary By Lu Ann Franklin Northwest Indiana Times October 22, 2011GARY - Stewardship of the land and the work of those who came before dominated as themes during the prayer and dedication service Saturday at the Stewart House Urban Farm and Gardens in the city.
Pastor Katurah W. Johnson, of Christ United Methodist Church, presided over the service at the corner of 15th Avenue and Massachusetts Street. The property is owned by the church and will become an urban farm and learning center, with planting scheduled for the spring.
History abounds at the site, said Sandra Rodriguez, market manager of the Miller Beach Farmers Market and one of the project leaders. The John Stewart Memorial Settlement House once stood there, established through the efforts of Trinity Methodist Church and Pastor Frank Delaney in the mid-1920s.
