Seeking Candidates for Position of  

Executive Director

 
The Goldstein Brownfields Foundation (GBF) is seeking an Executive Director to help plan, develop, and launch an ambitious slate of educational, mentoring, programming, capacity-building, fundraising, scholarship, and policy related initiatives in 2012.  The GBF will be accepting applications through October 31, 2011 and intends to extend an offer of employment no later than November 30, 2011. The anticipated start date for this position is no later than January 2, 2012.  
 

I. Mission

 
Founded in early 2008, incorporated in Florida, and formally recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the GBF's core mission is as follows:
 
  • Provide mentoring and financial resources to minority and female law students and law school bound college students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the environmental arena in order to increase the diversity of attorneys practicing environmental law in the private and public sectors;

 

  • Provide scholarships to environmental justice stakeholders to support their efforts to travel to, attend, and meaningfully participate in in-state and out-of-state conferences, symposiums, and workshops so that they can return to their communities and, by sharing newly gained knowledge and leveraging newly formed relationships, increase local capacity for environmental restoration, economic revitalization, and public health protection;

 

  • Provide financial, technical, and logistical support for Brownfields related educational programming in environmental justice and low income communities, with an emphasis on such programming initiated by third parties, such as professional and trade associations, community based organizations, government entities, and academic institutions; and

 

  • Undertake and publish research regarding the challenges, opportunities, successes, and near-successes associated with environmental restoration and reuse (ER&R) projects in Florida to develop and promote policy initiatives that define and/or expand best practices in ER&R, encourage broad stakeholder participation in ER&R activities, and support legislation and rulemaking that increase the scope and availability of financial, regulatory, and technical incentives for the private and public sectors.

 

 

II. Responsibilities

 

The responsibilities associated with this position include, but may not be limited to, the following:

 

A.        Strategy and Planning

 

·      Take direction from the President and the Board of Directors to further develop, refine, and implement the strategy of the organization.

 

·      Assist with development of scholarship programs and outreach strategies to support minority and female law students and law school bound college students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the environmental arena.

 

·      Oversee preparation of the annual budget and other necessary financial documents.

 

·      Provide information and justifications for Board of Directors in its budgetary review and approval process.

 

 

B.        Organizational Management

 

·      Ensure the organization has diverse staff with skills appropriate to the needs of the position through people management activities including hiring, separation of employment, ongoing staff development, performance management, compensation and benefits.

 

·      Ensure that employment policies are adhered to in all employment practices.

 

·      Ensure that the organization has the appropriate systems, physical space, and technology to operate efficiently and effectively.

 

·      Provide administrative and logistical support to the President and the Board of Directors.

 

C.        Fund Development

 

·      Manage all fund development activities, including grant writing, cultivation and stewardship of donors, event planning, and identifying new resources.

 

·      Actively seek and maintain a diverse donor base of individual, business, foundation and government segments.

 

·      Build long term relationships with key donor segments based on mission, cultivation and stewardship, program outcomes and sound fiscal management.

 

·      Lead the organization's financial growth in order to maintain healthy cash flow, provide full services to constituents and intended beneficiaries, and maintain adequate financial reserves.

 

D.        Public Relations

 

·      Promote GBF's visibility and welfare through participation and collaboration with (i) entities that have diversity in the legal profession as their mission; (ii) community and civic organizations focused on environmental redevelopment and public health; and (iii) other private and public sector parties that are aligned with GBF's vision.

 

·      Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan that provides a clear and concise message telling the organization's story.

 

·      Oversee the execution of media relations, including but not limited to developing press releases and all other media type engagements.

 

·      Develop the GBF's internet based presence by constructing and managing its web page and utilizing other forms of social media.

 

E.        Program Development and Implementation

 

·      Oversee and support the development, design and delivery of program initiatives, assuring that the goals and objectives are aligned with GBF's overall strategic plan.

 

·      Oversee and support the administrative components of all program services, including contract negotiations, contract and grant reporting and contracted work.


 

·      Provide for quality assurance monitoring of all GBF programs.

 

·      Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in matters pertinent to the mission of the GBF.

 

 

III. Qualifications

 

·      Personal qualities that include integrity, commitment to the mission of the GBF, the ability to inspire and motivate, and respect for ethnic, racial, and gender diversity and diversity of sexual orientation.

 

·      Demonstrated knowledge of diversity issues as they apply to the legal field.

 

·      A minimum of 5 years nonprofit work experience in comparable fields.

 

·      At least 3 years of demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, partnership development, and financial management.

 

·      Demonstrated knowledge of Brownfields, environmental regulation, economic development, and related public policy issues.

 

·      Strong and effective oral and written communication skills.

 

·      Must be proficient in developing multi-media presentations and creating internet based presence through various forms of social media.

 

·      Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite.

 
 

IV. Residency and Travel

 

The GBF is located in Miami, and the successful applicant must be willing to be resident in the South Florida tri-county area.  A modest amount of travel will be required, mainly in support of educational programming and logistics. By way of example, the GBF intends to host an annual conference for minority and female law students and law school bound college students to further its mission of promoting the diversity of attorneys practicing environmental law.  The applicant who is hired for this position may be required to spend up three  to four business days out of town to manage the event.

V. Compensation

 

The GBF will provide a competitive compensation and benefits package.  Salary shall be commensurate with experience.
