Testing for contamination: Group hopes to develop Confer Chevrolet site By Travis Morse Freeport Journal-Standard (IL) June 6, 2011Freeport, Ill. - To Joel Zirkle, the former Confer Chevrolet property in downtown Lena has great potential for redevelopment, but first officials must determine whether environmental contamination is present that could halt rehabilitation efforts.
The property, located at 102 W. Railroad St., covers about half a city block and would be ideal for development, considering its large size and prime location in downtown Lena, said Zirkle, a project manager for Fehr-Graham & Associates. The site is right across the street from Lena Mercantile, an antique gift shop and eatery.
Test samples have been taken at the property to assess it for possible contamination, and officials are now waiting to hear the results, which should be available in the next two weeks, Zirkle said.
