Upper Ringwood group hires experts in push for cleanup of old Ford dump

In their quest for the most aggressive cleanup at a Superfund site in Upper Ringwood, a community group has hired experts with a $50,000 federal grant to determine the best way to address remaining contamination left by Ford Motor Co. more than 40 years ago.

Ford's experts are drafting options to handle contamination in three major disposal areas and in groundwater, final remedies that must be approved by state and federal environmental agencies with input from the community.

The choice of a cleanup plan is a decision that could affect the region for decades. Besides the threat to the Upper Ringwood community, environmentalists worry what impact remaining pollution will have in a watershed that serves 2.5 million North Jersey residents.
