Faced with AK Steel's closing, Ashland has a model of success along the Ohio River in what can be done to rebuild - and revive

ASHLAND - Among worries about lost jobs that took the forefront when AK Steel announced the closure of Ashland's coke plant in December was the concern about what will happen to the land where the coke plant sits once the plant closes.

Land that has been used for industrial purposes can sometimes be difficult to reuse after that industry is gone. The land can become a brownfield - a piece of property where expansion, redevelopment or reuse can be complicated by the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
