Regulators say Runkle Canyon safe Land near Field Lab site called OK to develop By Teresa Rochester Ventura County Star (CA) December 29, 2010State regulators have determined Runkle Canyon, a large swath of Simi Valley land long-feared contaminated, is safe to develop, much to the chagrin of residents and activists who have challenged the site’s safety because it abuts the contaminated Santa Susana Field Laboratory. Officials with the state Department of Toxic Substances Control notified the site’s developer earlier this month that no further action is necessary based on the test results of samples taken from the 1,592 acres over the years to determine the presence of radionuclides and chemicals, according to the department’s letter sent to Runkle Canyon LLC. The determination means the developer will be able to move forward with plans to build 461 homes at the southern end of Sequoia Avenue. Runkle Canyon LLC halted development plans several years ago at the request of the Simi Valley City Council so the land could be tested for radioactive contamination. The city also refused to issue a grading permit until the testing was completed. ...
