North Jersey Superfund cleanups plagued by errors, cutbacks

If you've turned on a faucet in Fair Lawn any time since 1987, some of your water has been pumped through a tank at the water department where it is blasted with air to remove chemicals that could make you very sick.

Trichloroethylene, chloroform and a cocktail of other volatile organic compounds have to be taken out of water drawn from two wells in the western part of the borough that have been contaminated for at least 32 years - and have been on the federal Superfund list for 27.

The treated drinking water is considered safe, but the groundwater remains polluted. And now scientists are investigating a new concern at the site near the Route 208 Industrial Park: Toxic chemicals may be rising up through the ground and contaminating nearby homes and businesses.

When the area became a federal Superfund site in 1983, residents thought there would be a cleanup that would quickly resolve their health concerns. Now, they wonder if the designation helped at all.
