Feds Recommend Superfund for Garfield Chromium Contamination Saturday, BY ALEXANDER MACINNES The Record (NJ) October 2, 2010GARFIELD - The level of cancer-causing chemicals in parts of the city's groundwater is so high that a federal agency is recommending contaminated areas be categorized as a Superfund site, according to a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency.
That recommendation by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry was made the day before the agency issued a rare health warning for residents near the intersection of Midland Avenue and Grand Street to stay out of their basements because of high levels of hexavalent chromium.
"We consider the site a serious threat to human health under exposure scenarios related to the infiltration of groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium," wrote Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the ATSDR, in a Wednesday letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.
Officials are focusing on several blocks beginning near the intersection of Midland Avenue and Grand Street — where high concentrations of hexavalent chromium were discovered in testing in homes — and stretching westward toward the Passaic River.
