Sterling receives $1M loan for brownfields project Jennifer DeWitt Quad City Times (IL) August 16, 2010The city of Sterling, Ill., has been awarded a $1 million brownfields loan to help it clean up part of the former Northwestern Steel and Wire Plant for future redevelopment. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and city leaders announced the loan during a news conference at the site Monday. The $1 million loan will be used to mitigate asbestos contamination at the former steel mill's Plant 1 site. The abandoned 21-acre plant is located at 121 W. Wallace St. "The City of Sterling has successfully addressed brownfield cleanup and redevelopment issues on other portions of the sprawling 730-acre Northwestern Steel and Wire site," Illinois EPA Director Doug Scott said. "We have worked closely with the city to investigate and clean up the site and will continue to work with Sterling as they undertake the cleanup of Plant 1, one of the remaining and possibly most challenging parcels." ...
