Park plan approval in the mail

Three years after Central City Park was closed for environmental 
concerns, Westland and Wayne County officials are eagerly awaiting an 
approval letter that will clear the way for the first phase cleanup.

"It's really incredible news. We've received word from the MDNRE 
(Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment) that the 
phase one remediation plan for Central City Park has been approved," 
said Mayor William Wild at Monday's council meeting. "We haven't got the 
letter in the mail yet. Everyone here has been working on this for a 
long time."

Once the state approval is received, a Request of Proposals can be 
released and bids obtained for the first phase remediation, which would 
address environmental problems on the 12 acres at the east end of the 
park, and installing new soccer fields, pavilions and concession stands. 
The plan calls for installation of a geo-textile membrane, 12 inches of 
fresh soil and other landscaping to prevent park users from coming into 
contact with contaminated soil. Other areas would be covered by asphalt 
or concrete.
