Resolution of highway barn contamination is in sight By CINDY DOW New Bedford Standard Times September 24, 2009LAKEVILLE - The Board of Selectmen met with Superintendent of Streets Christopher Peck and Alan Hanscom of the Beta Engineering Group to discuss the engineer's recommendation to address the contamination of ground water at the highway barn by reclassifying the water from groundwater one to groundwater two.
"The scenario that we've now identified, which is going to be by far the easiest thing for the town to do, is to reclassify the groundwater," Mr. Hanscom said.
He noted that the Department of Environmental Protection made amendments to the groundwater standards in 2008 that will allow for the reclassification.
In order to meet the guidelines for reclassification, BETA will need to map the existing wells within the vicinity of the contamination using GPS, and assess the use of non-potable water supply wells.
