Multiple agencies to weigh Balloon Track cleanup plan Thadeus Greenson (North Coast) Times-Standard (CA) September 9, 2009Officials from the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board said Tuesday that the board's approval of a supplemental interim remedial action plan for the Marina Center Project does not automatically set the plan in motion.
The public has until Sept. 10 to comment on the cleanup plan, which the board approved in June and outlines the cleanup of industrial contamination on the Balloon Track property, the proposed home of the 43-acre Marina Center development. Humboldt Baykeeper, a nonprofit environmental watchdog organization, requested the board hold a period for public comment on the plan, and some have questioned whether the board was trying to keep the community in the dark by not noticing the public about the plan.
Dave Evans, the board's supervising water resource control engineer, said Tuesday that, as a practice, the board does not hold public comment periods for supplemental interim remedial action plans, as they are preliminary.
