Berkshire Community College cleanup to cost $5M
College officials outline remediation plans for the caulking in some buildings.

PITTSFIELD -- Berkshire Community College and state officials have a more defined plan to handle and dispose of polychlorinated biphenyls found in the caulking of some campus buildings, and they also say the fix will cost the state $5 million -- more than double the original estimate of $2.2 million.

Last week, the college announced that PCBs were found during a test of building materials.

Berkshire Community College's West Street campus was constructed in the 1970s. Prior to their being banned in the United States in 1977, PCBs were commonly used in the construction industry, including as an ingredient in industrial caulking. PCBs are a suspected carcinogen.

The University of Massachusetts at Amherst discovered a similar condition in one of its academic buildings in 2006.
