Residents challenge cleanup

BROOKSVILLE — Alleging incomplete testing, improper removal of tainted soils, deceptive reporting and secret deals, a half dozen residents of the Mitchell Heights neighborhood have challenged the final approval of the contamination assessment at the old public works compound in south Brooksville.

The residents are seeking a hearing before an administrative law judge. If that hearing is granted, it could set the county back more than a year in the process of getting a remediation plan approved by the state and implemented.

For a project that has already languished for 20 years since the county was first notified of the contamination, another delay is not what public works director Charles Mixson wants to see.
