Former Mo. coke plant to become business park CHERYL WITTENAUER/Associated Press Charleston Daily Mail (WV) September 3, 2009ST. LOUIS (AP) - A former coke production plant in south St. Louis will be converted to a business park with help from $6.7 million in state economic incentives.
Gov. Jay Nixon and St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay outlined details of the project, which could potentially bring 360 jobs, during a news conference at the site on Thursday. A massive cleanup of pollutants has to be done at the site before the land can be developed, and it will be funded under the state's Brownfield Redevelopment Program.
The 40-acre Carondelet Coke facility was a coal gasification and coke production plant. Development of the site dates back to the 1700s. Great Lakes Carbon Corp. sold the plant and property to Carondelet Coke in 1980, and the plant closed in 1988.
