Cleanup of Sewall's Island going well By ROBERT BRAUCHLE Watertown Daily Times (NY) MARCH 21, 2009Lu Engineers expects to have Sewall's Island cleaned by the end of this year. "We actually got pretty lucky," said Jacqueline S. Longton, city planner. "The island isn't as contaminated as they had thought." Dating back to the 1860s, the island in the Black River between Water and Huntington streets housed a plant that manufactured papermaking machines. The island has been considered a brownfield since 1999, when the city received a $200,000 federal grant to study its redevelopment. The city received an additional $561,200 from the state in 2007 to clean the contaminated land. ...
