Potential Superfund Site In East Announced

The property at 71 Clinton Road in Garden City is the site of a current 
environmental investigation by the New York State Department of 
Environmental Conservation. Representatives have notified Village 
officials that they plan to conduct soil, groundwater and gas samples on 
the property to determine if contamination is present.

"DEC officials recently met with Village public works officials and said 
they planned on doing additional testing in the area bounded by Clinton, 
Commercial and Stewart," said Mayor Peter A. Bee. "Any underground water 
plume would not affect Garden City water wells, although it could 
potentially affect Village of Hempstead wells. The DEC gave no 
indication of any potentially serious problems at the site and said it 
will furnish copies of its test results to the Village. As far as we 
know, no residential property is involved."

The property is currently occupied by several businesses including 
Nassau BOCES, Federal Express and Engal Burman. It is commonly known as 
the Pendaflex property since it was once home to Pendaflex, a 
manufacturer of organizational solutions, and Curtiss-Wright 
Corporation, a global provider of products and services in the defense, 
aerospace, energy and global industrial markets.
