Universal Mall is coming down

Struggling mall to be replaced by $20 million commercial center

By Norb Franz
Macomb Daily (MI)

Bruce Conn sat in his car and watched as two large backhoes tore through the exterior walls of Universal Mall in Warren, sending bricks and beams tumbling.

"This has been an eyesore a long time," said Conn, 62, who resides about two blocks west of the mall, in Madison Heights.

Demolition of the struggling mall, at Dequindre and 12 Mile roads, began Monday and is expected to continue through the week. Plans call for the landmark 752,000-square-foot mall - most of it built in 1965 - to be replaced with a $20 million retail complex.

Redevelopment of the site will be aided by a "brownfield" plan approved by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
