Rendell: Sprawl Must Be 'Redirected'

Philadelphia - Gov. Ed Rendell (D) yesterday addressed the Northeast 
Brownfields Development Forum held by the International Council of 
Shopping Centers on the redevelopment of previously utilized lands.

"You can't curtail sprawl by looking just at the supply side," Mr. 
Rendell told heads of Pennsylvania developers gathered at the 
Philadelphia Marriott. "What you have to do is redirect sprawl."

Instead of paving over vast swaths of undeveloped land, the governor 
said, areas already developed for defunct business projects must be 
sought out. He cited the former site of Fairless Steel Works in Bucks 
County, a "brownfield" area turned into an industrial park with 
assistance from the state.
