Ethanol plant plan greeted by questions

WRIGHT TWP. - Already affected by an industrial neighbor they believe contaminated their water supply, many residents along Church Road didn't seem thrilled about the possibility of a new ethanol plant opening nearby.

The benefits of what an ethanol production facility does - transforms crops, like corn, into clean-burning fuels - are often touted. But residents fear what it might leave behind, especially considering its proposed location at the former Foster Wheeler plant site.

Residents here speculate the plant was responsible for trichloroethylene (TCE) entering the water supply of up to 30 homes. TCE is a chemical used as a de-greaser and cleaning solvent and has been linked to cancer as well as kidney, liver and nerve damage. A class action lawsuit has been filed, causing most residents to refrain Saturday from commenting publicly on the new plant.
