City approves brownfield site to aid Hughes
State cleanup help would clear way for $32M distribution center expansion.

ORLANDO -- At the request of Hughes Supply Inc., the city of Orlando has created a new brownfield designation at Old Winter Garden Road and Ferguson Drive in west Orlando.


Hughes requested the zone be added to the Downtown Orlando Enhancement District as part of the Florida Brownfields Redevelopment Program. Under the state's program, the company would be allowed to receive environmental cleanup assistance as part of a $32 million planned expansion of its distribution center.

In January, Atlanta-based Home Depot announced it was purchasing Hughes (NYSE: HUG) in a $3.47 billion deal. Since then, Home Depot officials have indicated that after the Hughes acquisition is complete, the wholesale construction materials supplier will stay primarily in Orlando and its presence may grow.
