NAACP Claims Racism is Behind Toxic Dumping

WTVF-TV Newschannel 5 (Nashville, TN)
December 6. 2005

Tuesday, members of the NAACP claim dumping of toxic chemicals at the
Dickson County landfill happened on purpose. 

State and local branch members of the NAACP gathered on the lawn of the
county courthouse in Dickson. They say residents in the area were not
being told the truth about the contaminated water. 

County officials say high levels of Trichloroethylene or TCE were dumped
in the landfill in the 1970's. 

Sheila Holt-Orsted lives right next to the county landfill. She is a
breast cancer survivor, and several of her family members are currently
fighting a form of the disease. She blames the contamination for her
health problems, and she blames county leaders for not helping her
family. In 1994 she remembers being told something different than her
neighbors.
