Panel seeks to halt building on Superfund site 
Moratorium would affect parts of 4 towns

The Warren County Environmental Commission has called for a moratorium
on new development in parts of four municipalities within the Pohatcong
Valley Superfund site. 

"The contamination of this site has been known for years, but many of
the homeowners were not made aware of the pollution," William Rosebrock,
the commission's chairman, said earlier this week. 

"In some cases, homeowners began to smell the contaminant in their
water. Some homeowners who ran their own tests even discovered polluted
areas that were previously not known to the EPA," Rosebrock said Monday. 

The commission passed a resolution Jan. 27 calling for the moratorium,
which would halt development in parts of Washington Township, Washington
Borough, Franklin Township and Greenwich Township.
